Vera Wang – former figure-skater – is a famous fashion designer from New York best known for her wedding dress designs.
She is of Chinese descent, born and raised in New York City; has a degree in art history. Throughout her teen years she was into figure-skating. In 1971 Vera began working for Vogue. She was soon promoted to senior fashion editor and worked in this capacity for about fifteen years. She then joined Ralph Lauren as design director for accessories.
Selecting a wedding dress turned out to be a very difficult task. The frustration pointed to a niche. This is when Vera decided to design her own wedding gown. After all, if you want something done well, do it yourself. Soon she opened her first bridal boutique. Initially it offered wedding dresses by prominent designers. Later she launched her own collection of bridal wear.
A true talent can succeed in numerous areas. She designed a unique outfit for Nancy Kerrigan, the 1994 Olympics silver medalist. She has a very popular line of elegant evening dresses. In 2001 Vera launched her first fragrance. The same year she published “Vera Wang On Weddings” – a guide where she shares her ideas on various aspects of a wedding day. Her business continued to thrive, and today she has a number of bridal boutiques abroad, as well as collections of jewelry, lingerie, eyewear, shoes and homeware. She also has a line of affordable clothing – Simply Vera – exclusive for Kohl’s.
The list of Vera’s regalia is quite impressive, including CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year (2005), induction into U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame (2009), and Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award (2013).
